GW/MW-029 & 035

Friday 22nd August 2014

Summit Information for GW/MW-029
Hafod Ithel - 361m, 1 point
Association: Wales  Region: Mid Wales
Latitude: 52 17 26 N, Longitude: 4 2 22 W
Grid Reference: SN 610678, QTH Locator: IO72XG
Today's Sunrise: 05:13 UTC, Today's Sunset: 19:23 UTC

After a long drive from my home qth at Hirwaun, I arrived at the start point for the first of today's activation's GW/MW-029.  I parked up on the verge at SN-608-678.  From here it was just a few hundred meters to the east to the summit.  I erected the HF link dipole and my trusty Slim Jim and thought I was just about ready to get started, how wrong I was.  In place of my usual FT-817, today I brought along my FT-857 for a change,  Unfortunately what I failed to bring along was a BNC to PL259 adaptot...... The only option left open was to activate on 2M FM, which I thought might present a bit of a challenge from today's chosen summits. Luckily there were enough people about to secure my activation fairly quickly, with my best contact being Peter (MW5ADW) in  LLANFAIRPWLLGWYNGYLLGOGERYCHWYRNDROBWLLLLANTYSILIOGOGOGOCH

Summit Information for GW/MW-035
Rhos Ymryson - 327m, 1 point
Association: Wales  Region: Mid Wales
Latitude: 52 7 36 N, Longitude: 4 15 9 W
Grid Reference: SN 459500, QTH Locator: IO72UD
Today's Sunrise: 05:14 UTC, Today's Sunset: 19:23 UTC

It was around 11.45Z when I arrived at the large lay by near today's second summit where there is ample parking for 4 or 5 cars.  (SN 459-507).  Opposite the lay by there is a gravel track which heads south up to the summit of MW-035 which is around 750 meters away.  Shortly after setting up I heard the familiar voice of Allan (GW4VPX) who kindly invited me to his home for cup of tea on my way home.
Yet again I was lucky enough to activate the summit without too much difficulty and soon found myself heading down the hill ready for the journey home.

GW/SW-039

 GW/MW-039  Cefn Cenarth - 460m, 1 point
Association: Wales  Region: Mid Wales
Latitude: 52 22 26 N, Longitude: 3 30 57 W
Grid Reference: SN 969762, QTH Locator: IO82FI
Today's Sunrise: 03:49 UTC, Today's Sunset: 20:38 UTC

For today's activation I parked at SN 979-764 where there is just enough room without obstructing the road or gate.  A lovely warm, sunny day for a change with just a light breeze.
I followed the vehicle track west for about 500M where it ended, then followed the fence line up towards the summit. Its just over 1k in all, and you can comfortably walk it in 15 minutes.
The summit of Cefn Cenarth is flat grassland and ideal for large hf antennas.  After setting up I started on 5Mhz but only managed 2 contacts.  Moving on to 7Mhz I couldn't help noticing how quiet the band was with very few stations heard and the noise floor at zero.  After 10 contacts things seemed to dry up so I thought I would try my luck on 20M.  The first S2S of the day was EA2CQ/P with good reports both ways.
Ricky M6GWR was next up from G/WB 005 completing that summit for me, followed by Marco S57MS/P on S5/CP-019. All in all a very enjoyable day.  Many thanks to all stations that helped with my activation of GW/MW-039.  73 Mal  GW6OVD

GW/MW-033 & 028

Summit Information for GW/MW-033
Mynydd Carningli - 347m, 1 point
Association: Wales  Region: Mid Wales
Latitude: 51 59 57 N, Longitude: 4 49 28 W
Grid Reference: SN 062372, QTH Locator: IO71NX
Today's Sunrise: 04:30 UTC, Today's Sunset: 20:00 UTC

The access road to the car park at SN070 373 is very narrow so take care. Here you will find ample parking for 8 -10 cars.

From the car park there is a clearly defined path all the way to the summit

At the summit there isn't a lot of room for large antennas and driving guy pegs in took quite a few attempts.  There is a nice spot slightly below the summit that offered good shelter from the strong easterly wind.
There are fantastic views from here down over Fishguard and Newport Bay as well as the inland to the east and south.
Band conditions weren't particularly good today so following a few QSO's & S2S on 5 Mhz, I spent the rest of my time on 7 mhz before heading off to the second summit of the day.

Summit Information for GW/MW-028

Association: Wales  Region: Mid Wales
Latitude: 51 58 56 N, Longitude: 4 37 5 W
Grid Reference: SN 203348, QTH Locator: IO71QX
Today's Sunrise: 04:29 UTC, Today's Sunset: 20:00 UTC

After a 20 minute drive from Mynydd Carningli I arrived at
SN 209--304 where there is a small lay by with just about enough room for 1 car.  From here I headed straight up the hill then followed the fence line up to the trig point at SN 203 349.

This summit is very exposed and I was glad of my well pegged down umbrella to shelter from the wind.
First to call in was Allan GW4VPX and Roy GW6DGU who were on Mynydd Eppynt SW-018. but contacts soon dried up on 5Mhz. I then tried 7Mhz but conditions weren't very good there either so after logging another 8 contacts I decided to call it a day and start my long drive home.  Many thanks to all who helped with today's activation of MW-033 & MW-028.  73,  Mal  GW6OVD
