After a lengthy period of bad weather here in Wales, the SOTA enthusiasts from Aberdare Amateur Radio Society were anxious to take to the hills once more! The Summit for the day's activation was Tor y Foil which is situated in the Brecon Beacons National Park (Wales) on the Eastern side of the Talybont Reservoir. Three group members (Phil, Mal and Andy) met at Mal's house at 9.30 am and set off toward Talybont. We soon arrived at our start point, just to the South-West of the summit (SO 10970 18765), where we found a small parking and picnic area. As we got out of the car we started to wonder what we'd let ourselves in for, as it was very cold!

We started our walk to the summit, which was a little boggy underfoot initially, but soon dried out as the trail started to steepen. 

As it was a lovely sunny morning, we enjoyed fantastic views of the Talybont Reservoir and surrounding mountains.

The summit is a modest 551m and not too far from the car park so it didn't take us long to arrive and start to set up the station.

It was predictably very cold on the summit with a biting wind, fortunately the summit slopes away slightly to the East and gave us some protection whilst operating. We set up two antenna support masts, one of which held a link dipole for HF use and the other a SlimJim for 2m. 

We began the proceedings on 2m FM and the contacts were soon rolling in. In no time at all we each  had the contacts required for activation, so we decided to try some other bands including 5MHz, 7MHz & 18MHz. I particularly enjoyed the 5MHz operating as it was my first time on the band since receiving my NOV. Another particular highlight was 6 'summit to summit' contacts, which I believe may be a record for our group!
