GW/NW-009

Summit Information for GW/NW-009
Cadair Idris - Penygadair - 893m, 8 points
Association: Wales  Region: North Wales
Latitude: 52 41 57 N, Longitude: 3 54 32 W
Grid Reference: SH 711130, QTH Locator: IO82BQ
Today's Sunrise: 06:11 UTC, Today's Sunset: 18:00 UTC

For our first venture into the North Wales SOTA region, Andy and I chose to activate GW/NW-009 Cadair Idris Although the summit of Cadair Idris is actually called Pen y Gadair most people simply refer to this amazing mountain by its general name Cadair Idris, translated it actually means Chair of Idris, a Welsh giant from Celtic mythology.

Our day began with a 7am start ready for the two and a quarter hour drive to our start point at Minfford. (SH732 115) I chose this route because all I had read about this mountain indicated that this would be the most direct yet physically challenging, with amazing views all the way. We weren't disappointed on either score! This is a truly spectacular mountain, and the many photos I took along the route, fail miserably to capture its sheer scale and beauty.
The route follows the ridge in a clockwise direction high above Llyn Cae, then rejoins the original path at the slate bridge (SH727 120). Total distance is 10Km with a gruelling 874M of ascent. Walking time was around 5 hours.

Our activation was VHF only today, as we wanted to reduce the weight of the kit as much as possible. The take off was excellent and contacts were made into England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, receiving very good reports. Our only problem was being able to keep the antenna up in the very strong wind at the summit.

All in all a very enjoyable day, and hopefully just the first of many visits to the Snowdonia National Park.
Many thanks to all stations that helped with our activation of GW/NW-009

GW/SW-023 Allt yr Esgair

 GW/SW-023  Allt yr Esgair
 393m, 1 point
Association: Wales  Region: South Wales
Latitude: 51 54 37 N, Longitude: 3 16 19 W
Grid Reference: SO 126243, QTH Locator: IO81IV
Today's Sunrise: 05:55 UTC, Today's Sunset: 18:17 UTC

Today's starting point is at the village hall at SO122 256 where there is ample parking and a picnic table with great views over Llangorse Lake. From here there is a very clearly defined footpath all the way to the summit which is around 1.5K with 193M of ascent..  Since my last activation of this summit, there has been a great deal of work done to improve the path which used to be very muddy in places.
At the summit there is a dry stone wall, which offers a nice sheltered spot to operate from.
Alt yr Esgair is surrounded by high ground which would make a  purely VHF activation a little challenging, so most of my contacts were made on HF.
Alan (GW4VPX) and Steve (GW0BBU) were activating SW-010 Craig Y Llyn, on the opposite side of the Brecon Beacons, so during our S2S qso we arranged to rendezvous  for a chinwag and to put a face to the voice over a cup of coffee.  Great to finally meet the lads in person after so many S2S chats.

GW/MW-003

Summit Information for GW/MW-003
Drygarn Fawr - 645m, 4 points
Association: Wales  Region: Mid Wales
Latitude: 52 12 43 N, Longitude: 3 40 1 W
Grid Reference: SN 862584, QTH Locator: IO82EF
Today's Sunrise: 05:40 UTC, Today's Sunset: 18:42 UTC

For today's activation of Drygarn Fawr I parked near the ford at SN836 555 where there is plenty of room for 8-10 cars.
The route I chose was around a 10k round trip, starting by heading north east following the forestry track as far as SN851 562  and then cross country towards the summit.  The gradient is fairly gradual most of the way but I found it very wet under foot in places.  The walk to the summit took around an hour with just over 300M of ascent.
Conditions at the summit were a little challenging today, with a high wind making antenna erection a little difficult to say the least.  I found myself a nice sheltered spot between the trig point and the cairn and set up my trusty 857 ready for the many contacts to come.
Many thanks to all stations that helped with my activation of  Drygarn Fawr today.
 73, Mal (GW6OVD)
